MOBILE APP REVIEW: YOUTUBE

 Hello everyone,

YouTube youTube is one of the apps I use daily. I primarily use it for entertainment and educational purposes.

Its usability offers user-friendly features for people of all ages. The app provides an interface that allows users to browse, search, and watch videos. It remembers your viewing history and stores it in your account. This also updates your main page with similar interests and suggestions for new content based on what you watch. Furthermore, the app includes options for subtitles and voice commands, allowing individuals with disabilities to enjoy its features.

The design is clean and visually appealing, keeping videos and shorts organized along with filters and option indicators for easy access to your home and account. It also includes a dark mode option that is easy on the eyes during nighttime viewing. Having worked nights, I can say from experience that this is much more comfortable compared to the standard white screen. Since the app is compatible with all devices, it is optimized for various screen sizes, ensuring a smooth experience on smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Video thumbnails are designed to be eye-catching, helping attract viewers’ attention.

Its functionality allows users to adjust video quality, control playback speed, and utilize picture-in-picture mode for multitasking. The app enables users to like, comment, and share videos, fostering community engagement and interaction with content creators. Users can easily subscribe to channels, manage their subscriptions, and receive notifications for new uploads. This ensures it caters to your preferences and helps the algorithm make better recommendations. The app also includes features for creators, such as video editing, live streaming, and analytics to track performance. Users can download videos for offline access, which is handy for those with limited or no internet connectivity.

One of my key recommendations for the app is to shift its priorities from profitability and focus more on the users. I remember when YouTube first launched; there were no ads, and there was more creative freedom. Now, most videos are overwhelmed with ads and surveys, which diminishes the user's desire to watch certain content. This also impacts new content creators whose videos may not be advertised or suggested unless they reach a certain number of views or have a contract with YouTube. Many features I mentioned are also locked behind a paywall, restricting the user experience. They should limit ads to one per video and offer some features with limited accessibility.

Although offline viewing is a convenient feature, some users express dissatisfaction with the restrictions on how long downloaded videos remain accessible or the inability to download certain content. The account you sign in with should allow access to cloud storage, enabling users to download and store videos without limitations. Netflix employs a similar process when downloading episodes.

Some users find the playback controls less intuitive, particularly when attempting to rewind or fast forward. They should modify the controls to provide options for how far to rewind or fast-forward, such as in increments of 5 seconds or more. Additionally, some devices have cases and screen protectors that obstruct access to the buttons; they should consider changing the button orientation to improve accessibility.
